Unite the Union – Leadership Challenge

27th March 2018

Gerard Coyne, who was very narrowly defeated by Len McCluskey in the election for general secretary of Unite, is bringing a legal challenge against the union.

The first of ten complaints was heard by the Certification Office today in which Mr Coyne argued that the election was called in breach of the rules. A further nine complaints, which centre around conduct during elections, will be heard in June 2018.

If Mr Coyne is successful the election result could be set aside, and a new one called.

The Guardian comments on the case here.
